During World War II, in suppressing the guerrilla war in Ukraine and Lithuania, the Russian army carried out terror and genocide on the conquered nations. The people of older generation are aware of this force all too well. For Lithuanian families, those 50 years of the occupation meant that their men were subject to a forced conscription.
